Who let the Kat out? Who? Who? ....well, I violated my own rule. I let my kat sit outside overnight (at a hotel) while at the Power Festival this past weekend in West Palm Beach, FL. Well, at 4:30 am Sunday morning my Kat was screeching (alarm sounded) and I woke to find a 12" slash in my top!!!! (Yeah, I have a true ragtop now) The police told me they found a white residue around the slash where the surgical gloved-thief (wanna-be) reached into my car. I don't know how the motion detection system worked, but I am glad it did cuz it scared off the thieves. I now only have to worry about getting a new top...guessing it cost about $3K. Does anyone know what a new top for the Kat costs?? I am getting an estimate for the repair (roof replacement) from a Chrysler dealer Monday or Tuesday. I have vowed to NEVER take my kat on any overnight trip without it staying in a garage. I am still so upset that my kat was violated. I am starting a kat-sitting service whenever we have an overnight prowler event in Florida. (Event Host provides security for visiting kats while in his town for the event). |

I am really sorry to hear that happened to your car Joe. Just last night, my girlfriend and I went out to eat and I parked pretty far out at the restaurant under a light. She couldn't understand why I was getting all paranoid about people walking around the car and looking at it. It wasn't until people started looking in the windows did she understand - its not the fact that people are looking in the car, its that I don't want my privacy being violated. Your situation is on a much higher level, one that I hope I never have to experience with the Prowler (I had the top on my Mustang slashed once, along with two of the tires, but that was a Mustang, and probably do to a fatal attraction situation). It's not bad enough that someone has vandalized one of your possessions, it's also the violation of privacy that goes along with it. That is why I posted last week about parking in the middle of BFE only to come out and find someone had parked right next to me. I take it as if someone has literally just poked me in the shoulder, as if in a challenge. Anyway, sorry to hear about it Joe and keep us informed as to your progression in getting it fixed. Joe... sure sorry to hear about the slashed top on your Cat, especially that it happened in our home area during one of the planned Prowler events. There is always so much work that goes into promoting events so more Cat owners will attend and these types of senseless and hostile actions really do hurt events that require an overnight hotel stay to attend!!! Regrettably, I have replaced 2 slashed convertible tops recently... one slashed in my driveway another at the airport, never at a motel. Like you, the motion detectors set off the alarm, but the real damage was already done and the alarm noise only prevented something from being stolen. Best Wishes… Jay ------------------ |

I do not believe it has motion detector on factory alarm. The alarm goes off when the door handle of hood release is pulled from the inside. My guess he pulled door handle and set it off. I have done both to test the alarm on my car plus had little kid pull inside door handle at cruise in with alarm set. Scared the crap out of him. Sorry to hear about the top, but that is why we pay insurance premium. I would check with someone that installs convertible tops. They will do it for 1/2 of what chrysler will charge and more than likely the same guy will do it. Dealers sub out soft trim work like that. All you need is the canvas, unless they bent top bows. Top for nephews `91 Chevy at Chevy dealer $1,300. Top at place that is putting on my top on my `67 Dart, about $650 for his car. Guess what dealer uses him to install the tops on all their convertibles, SAME. Hey check with the guy wanting blue top. Trade him for his black top and let him get new blue and pay your deductible. Good luck! ------------------ |

Joe, Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Friday someone hit the trunk lid on my intrepid three seperate blows and but three nice dents in it, plus scratched the rear window. I have no idea who or why but it really aggravates me. But it could be worse, it could be the cat. Wildcat has a good idea about making the trade with Bob Halloran. Unfortunately you are about 1300 miles apart. |

Thanks for the ideas and concern folks! I am just so full of emotions, one of disbelief cuz I am so anal about protecting my kat. I took the one chance of letting my kat sit out for one weekend....and it bit me. Larry, good ideas. Heck, I am open to most any idea now. I am guessing a new top & labor is gonna cost around $3k (prowler priced). Yeah, I have insurance....$1000. deductable. Have not had an accident or claim since I was 16 when I slid on black ice in PA. I have an appointment with claims adjuster for Thursday. I am planning to get a Chrysler dealer to provide estimate tomorrow or Tuesday. I will keep everyone informed of the progress. Am I the first (better be the last) one to have his/her prowler top slashed??
Well, as someone said....learn from me......this is a wakeup call to everyone, there are many people that want these kats, and many are not willing to pay even MSRP. Thanks again for the concern and support....means a lot to me now. |

Larry Lord - after reading this, my question is are we having security at the Holiday Inn at Deadwood, S.D.??? The roped off area at Flagstaff was a good idea, and I ran into the Little America security people twice during the late nite hours out next to the sleeping cats. That sure made me sleep better at night - but maybe it was too cold for thieves also? ------------------

That is exactly my paranoia. People just don't care and are arrogant with no morals. They will pay for what they did, even if it is not in this life. I would also volunteer to have night watches with other Prowler owners or take turns, something like a neighborhood crime watch at the next events. I feel for you in this moment of grief for your Cat Joe. Good luck! Going to test alarm like Wild Cat says right now. ------------------ 2000 Prowler Woodward Edition (red/black-USA) |

On a somewhat similar note... the other week we were shopping at Macy's in a decent neighborhood. I of course parked WAY away from everyone and noticed a car pull up next to us. They never entered the store. The next day, I had a sheet metal screw in my rear tire. Those punks might have just wanted to slash your roof and not steal it. Unfortunately, with a nice car, there are idiots who will try to harm you or the Kat just because you have what they do not. I feel overnight security is a really good idea for these Prowler runs and will not add much to the cost per car. ------------------ |

Joe, The reason the alarm went off is because when you set the alarm and you open the car from the the inside it will set off the alarm. That is how you test the alarm. roll down the windows, arm the alarm system, wait a minute or 2, then open the car from the inside. as soon as the door handle is lifted from the inside the alarm should sound. there is no motion alarm on factory alarms. These theifs must have been stupid to try and steel a prowler. 4AM out and about in the Prowler they would have been pulled over in a second by cops
