It turns out my orange Kat with 300 miles on it has a cracked fire wall, this is one of many warrenty problems this kat has had already. California Lemon law states I get a new car (but I did buy this from Geogia, but the lemon law does not care where the car was bought from, only that it was SOLD in California). CJ? Gary? Anyone know who I need to contact in DC to be able to insure I get myself a new, and WELL MADE Kat? This one should never have been shipped. ------------------ |

Yes how did you know there was crack in the firewall. Did you hear some sounds? I would like to hear the story about how you found this problem & keep us updated on what they are going to do. Sorry to hear this, lucky you still have another KAT to drive. I know you still did not want to hear that. cnote6 |

It's about 4" long and spreading, right on the top right side of the firewall, right where the trim for the wipers goes. My Prowler Mech found it when I set it there for a bad squealing noise and plenty of other repairs. John King told me to get my local dealer on the ball with the DC rep here and see about a factory buy back. Anyone I can call to put some pressure on the rep to get me a new car, or if someone can call them for me... would be much appreciated. ------------------ |

Yeah, that would be great. Now I'm getting paranoid as I have been plagued by a dash squeek since soon after I put on my front suspension stiffeners. ------------------ |

Sure, I'll go over there tomorrow or Monday (the dealer where it is at) and take a picture or two. ------------------ |

in your owners manual there is a form that says customer arbitration process . In the middle of that book fill it out and send it to the address already printed on the form. Contact the dealer that you took it too for the warranty problem. Cal. has very loose lemon laws. Arbitration form is the key and contact with the dealer there in cali. Todd do this and it will all fall into place. ------------------ This message has been edited by Lance.d on 01-05-2001 at 06:20 PM |

Todd, just asked my wife about the lemon law (X-inhouse attorney for Merecedes). At the time she left Mercedes, they would only buy back a car that had been attempted to be fixed by a dealer three times for the same problem and not fixed. She thinks the law was revised last year. Really miss the S-Class company car!!!..LOL |

The Lemon Law as stated is correct ... dealer must have tried and failed on attempts to fix a problem before it falls under "most state's" lemon laws. This IS a job for Super CJ ! ------------------ |

Monday I'll have them Gary... had appointment's today and could not get down there. I cannot see how they can say no, really, the fire wall is aluminum, is it cracked on a weld. This means a total car tear down to either weld the firewall or replace it. Aluminum MUST be ground out where the crack is, a hole drilled at the ENDS of the crack per each side and specially heated and cooled or it will NOT work for a weld! While it is "fixable", it will take months to do this I think. ------------------ |

Do not do that. Get a new car. Please do not do that, Todd.

I sure am going to try that. I'm not into 6 months of payments on something I cannot see and drive! ------------------ |

This turned out to be caused by not properly relieaved hood hinges at the factory. While the problem has been fixed, the servicing dealer messed up the car enough to cause it to go to Arbitration and they are going to be billed for the car now. Just look by the hood hinge area and see where they layers are right where it bolts together. It is a stressed joint holding the firewall, body panel area, hood hing and window. ------------------ |

DKLA, the firewall is the "wall" between the engine and the passenger compartment. It was probably called that in the old days when they had a lot of automobile fires that started in the engine compartment. A lot of old cars had gasoline leaks, back firing thru the carbs., etc, even into the 50's and 60's before fuel injection came into vogue. It had to be sealed so that the fire did not come into the passenger compartment too quickly, similar to fire walls and fire doors in buildings. |
