For those of us that do not reside in the
"sunbelt", what preparations have been made
if any to store the Kat for winter? Do you
not take it out until Spring or still use it
straight thru??

Livng here in the Northwest, if we chose to put it away every time it might rain, it might never get out of the garaage. Therefore, either my wife or I use it everyday, all year, rain or shine.

Welcome to the board, Dave, having been to Maple Valley at least a dozen times, I always wondered how Prowler owners enjoyed their Cats. Just Drive them all the time.

Also been to Redmond, I really love Seattle.

Again, Welcome, Jump in anytime.

Welcome to POA Dave,

I drive mine on weekends until they Salt they roads, then up till they are clean.

I showed my car last winter and had out for that. Driving on & off the trailer I do not count as driving, But I did get to spend QUALITY time with my "WildCat" and show off at indoor shows.

I have a heated garage and really only make sure the car is clean and covered. I keep my car FULL in the winter of AMOCO Ultimate.

Jacking, blocking ( due to lift points this would be real pain in the a**), fuel stabilizer, battery tender, waxing are all good ideas but depends on your cats resting bed.

I have never done this before but I know for a fact that fuel does gel and turns into kerosene and will make a huge mess of the fuel system after 4 or 5 months. Fuel stabilizer is a must. Maybe some one else with a little expertise will know the correct dosage of this product.

A voltage activated trickle charger is also mandatory.

Hazen, If it would make it, I would throw a big snow ball at ya.
MLP, I allways run my tank as empty as I dare before storing it.In the spring fill it up with fresh gas.No problem
If you keep it stored in a warm place the battery is no problem either.
just my opinion.

Hi DW- Welcome to the POA. I here you got a little cold last night. Did the chill get the Cat out? In Dallas, I drive year round as well, but the heat is the Big factor so I try and keep it out of the direct sun as much as possible... and lots of wax. Nyle- How about some snowballs here.. on second thought, just some rain would be nice. This is the 85th day without rain in Dallas.

"fuel does gel and turns into kerosene and will make a huge mess of the fuel system after 4 or 5 months"

In regard to the fuel, I have always heard that, but I have let cars sit for 6 months to a year and never had any problems. It was recently explained to me that in a closed system gasoline retains its properties much longer than in an open container. As for proof of this theory, I just picked a car that had been only been driven once since March of 99 and the engine rebuilt in the last couple of months. Ran fine and there was no evidence of any gumming up in the fuel system.

I have always stored my cars with the tank full. Prevents condensation inside the tank.

A automatic battery charger is a very good idea. Batteries can loose up to 10% of their charge per month. I just bought a new one a Sears a few months ago, I think it was about $79.00.

I have installed automatic battery chargers on all of my cars. The one I use is extremely convienent, since it is mounted in the car next to the battery using an existing hole. Whenever I don't plan on driving the car for a while, I just pop the hood and plug into the short AC cable on the charger.

The charger is electronic and fully automatic and is about $35.00 from Walmart.

The part number is WM-1-12A and the brand name is now EverStart (used to be Schumacher).

I put the Cat away usually around November 1st. Fill the gas tank and start it the first of every month. I have had no problems for the last two years. My garage is unheated, but it stays closed up all winter. I store five cars in that garage and have never had a problem with any of them.

I have `74 Caddy Coupe de Ville with 500 CU. IN. motor. It has 27,000 miles on it so it has sat most of it's life. As far as I know the Carb has never been off of it and it runs great. It never had anything special done to it until the last few years and I don't do much to it now since it is in heated garage.

Also have `81 Imperial with 13,500 Miles. I have planned on driving this year to run the gas out and put fresh fuel in but think I will have to drain and refill because every time I plan on driving to show it looks like rain. It has only been in the rain 4 times and don't plan on #5 happening. It is running alittle rough but don't remember putting more than a few gallons of gas in it since `98

One thing no one has posted is to change the oil if you are leaving parked for extended period of time. Each fall it is time for oil change in my car and it is due again, so it will be my fall change soon.

OK, guys, here goes:

We fill the cat with gas, adding fuel stabilizer at the gas station - drive the cat back to ensure the stabilizer reaches throughout the fuel system. Full tank of gas minimizes the amount of air in the tank, minimizing oxidation of the fuel.

We use battery tenders because they monitor battery voltage, only charging to maintain a full charge, never overcharging. Battery Tender just released a permanent bleed for the battery and with a cap to protect the connector. Also change the oil and filter before storing it. Air the tires to the maximum pressure on the sidewall, making sure to remember to lower them to the recommended levels in the Spring.

In our climate, cold winter, high humidity, stored in a garage that is used daily, we elect to bag the car. There are many types of bags. The best solution is a black plastic bag and large quantities of dessicant in the bag to remove all moisture within the inert atmosphere. When the car is removed, it is absolutely as clean as the day it was put away with the engine starting faster than I would care to have.

We thoroughly cleaned the cat, making sure it is completely dry before putting it in the bag. Also making sure that it is waxed and detailed. We cover it with its normal car cover before putting in the bag. It is a type of bag that zips on three sides. You drive the car onto the bag carefully. Distribute the dessicant tubes under the hood, in the trunk, in the interior and in the bag. We used 20 lbs. and extracted 1 to 1 1/2 gallons of water. Then we put on the normal cover so that the bag doesn't scratch the car if it blows around at all. We put on the battery tender and zipped up the bag. When we took it out this Spring, it was as clean and beautiful as the day we put it in.

I pushed the envelope last year and drove the cat until about the middle of November until Bob finally made me surrender!!!! Was able to get it back out about the end of March. It will depend on the weather as to how long I will be able to push it!!!!!

Battery Tender is a brand name for a very sophisticated battery storage system. They retail for $59.95, but you can search the internet with their name and find one for about $40.00....don't pay more. If you can't find it, I'll get you the contact.

The system monitors battery voltage and charges at 1.25 amp per hour until the voltage returns to full charge. It automatically shuts off and monitors voltage until needed again. It doesn't boil the water out of the battery nor does it overcharge it. It is a 12-volt.

We have them on several cars that we store. My Dodge Ram, my 83 CJ-7, 69 Scrambler and my Prowler during the winter. Also have them on our pontoon boat, and lawn tractor. They also make a 6-volt.

Anytime I can help.........!

MidlifeProwler (and anyone else who is interested):

The battery tender can be found at:
www.accwhse.com

It is part #01991 and they have it listed for $37.95. Bob says it is the cheapest price he found anywhere and they have great service!
