After hearing all the unfortunate dealer stories, I thought I'd share a good one. I purchased my Prowler (2000, silver) from Westbury Jeep Chrysler on Long Island, NY. The price was fair ($47,500). When it was time for servicing, I found that they give loaner cars. I droped the car off this morning (airbag light is on) and they turned over to me a Jeep Cherokee with 6600 miles on it. I drove it into Manhattan where it was promptly stolen! Rather sheepishly, I called Randy Sporn (one of the owners) and explained that I seem to have permenantly misplaced his shiney new Jeep. He was extreemly gracious on the phone. I filed the police reports and took a train to Westbury, where they picked me up from the train station. Had a visit with Randy to share with him the whole unfortunate story where he was, again, quite gracious. I went out to collect my car and the service manager came over to me to say that the car wasn't ready yet. "Tom, we just got behind, I'm real sorry," no lies or excuses. Randy put his hand on my shoulder and guided me over to another Jeep while apologizing for the inconvienence! Would I do business with them again? Oh yeah. By the way, he has three Prowlers on his lot, a black 2000, a silver and a Bow Tie 2001. I don't know what he wants for them, but he has been reasonable with his prices, if interested, call him at 516-333-2666.

Anyone looking for a nice Cherokee?? My cousin Vinny from Brooklyn called and said he needed to sell his new Jeep cheap because his kid needs braces. (I didn't even know he had kids.) Anyway, if you are looking for a new low mileage Cherokee email me at ed monahan at HOT MAIL.

Vinny called back. You will have to go to N.Y. to pick it up. He isn't allowed out of the state due to some rule from his parole officer.

I got one.

Quicksilver, who is a local here in SoCal had his car quit in an intersection, the switch in the tranny took a dump. He had it towed to the Dealer I use, Jack Powell in Escondido, they are Great, as soon as the Cat came in and they had him on the road in 45 minutes. That's service.

To bad all Dealers can't work the same way, the customer comes first.

Tom, your story is way better but I thought I would throw this one in.

Tom, I guess you should be glad it was the Jeep you took to Manhattan and not your Prowler!

Just an update. I had a really uncomfortable day driving the second Jeep throughout some of the nastier parts of Brooklyn (East NY, Bedstyuvesant, etc.) but I arrived back at the dealer at 7:30 PM (they are open until midnight!) with their shiny new car. I don't really worry about bring the Prowler (or my NSX)into the bad neighborhoods because most cars are stolen for parts, and neither the Prowler or NSX are exactly ubiqutious and because, as most of you guys have found out, there are always so many people looking at the car there really isn't a good time to steal it. By the way, if "Vinnie" could return the car, then I wouldn't have to pay the $1,000 insurance deductible! Ouch.

Tom, sorry to hear about the $1000 deductible. I don't think I ever heard of anyone having to pay a deductible on a stolen car. Is it your insurance or the dealers who is paying and making you pay a deductible. I would make a claim with both insurance companies or else steal another jeep and part it out and make the $2000 that you would then owe. hahahahha Hope you come out of it better than it sounds so far.

Ed,
The fine print says that I am responsible for the insurance on the loaner car. I carry a $1000 deductible on all my cars (the Prowler, NSX, Subaru SVX and a Pathfinder) and only pay $5500 for the fleet. Carrying the larger deductible seemed like a good idea right until that damn Jeep was snatched! The dealer, Randy Sporn, was very gracious and allowed me to just pay him his deductible and then I didn't have to run this mess through my company. A good thing too, as last December I stuck my first NSX into a tree. This would have been my second total loss within a year and that would have put me in a pretty untoward position insurance wise.

Ouch. The Jeep is probably in the hold of a ship going to its new owner or parted out within a few hours of when it was taken. Bummer and sorry to hear about it. I knew a guy who had a brand new Firebird stolen on a Monday so he bought another new one and it was stolen the same day he bought it, on Friday of the same week. It was recovered without any interior the next day. He moved out of his apt. shortly thereafter, as they were both taken from the same parking place. And you thought your luck was bad. I wonder how his insurance agent liked him after that. That was back in the 70's.
