I was drafted on May 21, 1965 and trained as Radio/Teletype operator with a Secret clearance and trained in Crypto. Sent to Uijongbu, Korea (home of M*A*S*H) without a leave and arrived on Christmas Eve since they needed us so badly. They didn't have a radio and I never even saw a radio after that, much less operated one. Sent home a month early to Ft.Lewis, Wash. to a Nuclear Weapons company since they needed me so badly. They had about 20 radio/teletype operators and I became a nuclear weapons clerk for the last 6 months. I don't think I ever did an honest days work, except for KP, in two years. SNAFU

Some of these stories take me back...... remembering terms I thought I had long forgotten...NOTHING LIKE OLD WAR STORIES FROM OLD SOLDIERS ......Before joining the USAF, I was a computer programmer, thought this would be an easy thing to do in the USAF, couldn't even test into it, their equipment was so many generations older than anything I had ever seen, I didn't know enough to get in the so called computer division...became a (sorry girls)"titless WAF",office worker....while stationed overseas we were all issued ammunition, but no one had a gun , couldn't see the enemy attack anyway, our building(old SAC) had no windows, we just hoped they would knock and give us a fair chance !!!! Always assumed we would throw the bullets at them if ever attacked...lived just off the coast of Red China for 18 mos ...the Chinese bombed the beach daily, but nothing was there....we were a combat support group, so C-130s left our base day and nite...the ONLY job I learned while in for 44 mos that I could use on the outside, was how to drive a trash truck ...in January 2000 I made a trip to Wash DC to pick up a silver Kat...was so impressed with what I saw, and what I didn't get to see, I wanted to go back....I am sure by now most of you know I don't keep cars to long....I wanted to go back to DC again, so I called the same dealer again in July, and they had a 2000 Yelo on the floor at MSRP...I bought it and drove to DC AGAIN to pick up a Kat mainly to see the sights I had missed the first time....can't begin to describe the emotions of seeing my friends on "the Wall"...If you have never been there, by all means go see it, if you have seen it, you know what I am talking about...I plan to keep buying every Kat this dealer gets so I can keep making return trips to DC...my job for 18 of the 44 mos was closing out pay records for the guys that didn't come home, getting their final paycheck processed and sent to their families(had a stack to process daily)...sadly, they were normally due just a few hundred dollars...highlight of my entire tour was when the POWs were released...I was in San Antonio (Lackland AFB)at that time and got to help many of these guys get their pay records updated upon their return..during the last 20 mos or so I processed pay records for the guys in T7(mental ward), these guys made it home but didn't know it.....sorry so long, guess you are lucky I didn't type for hours X-Black 99 X-Silver Bullet X-Black 2000 X-Y2K YELO currently - Y2K YELO X 3 5 Kats in 9 mos and still shopping |
