Any ideas would be appereciated.

Driving back from the Drag Strip Friday and stopped for gas. Started the car and noticed the trans would only go in second gear? I also noticed the speedometer was not working and the Check Engine Soon lite was on. I found I could get it to finally go into 4th gear if I ran it up to about 4000 to 5000 thousand rpm and then it shifted. Made it home then. A suggestion was to disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes and that made the lite go out but the minute I drive about 5 feet it goes into second and thats all you get again. Fluid is a nice red in color and no burnt smell at all. Level is fine too. I did notice that once it has shifted into second and I put it in park there is a clicking about every 8 to 10 seconds from the trans, sound like a selonoid sound?? Any body ever experience this?

My problem is that I have just installed a Nitrious system last week and would have to remove it all in order to tajke this to a dealer and still get warranty. Any help would be great.

I understand that the transmission is completely controlled by the Trans Control Module ( computer located in the trunk on passenger side.) Make sure that all cables are properly seated and most important that all Ground straps are in place. My car originally had a shifting problem ( before I took possession) and was solved by adding a ground strap. Last week I found the original cause. Ground stap from Transmission to frame located about the oil cooler was almost off. Hope this helps --

Fred - the trans computer also controls the speedometer. A pulse generator in the transmission creates the input signals to the controller. So problem could be the "pulse generator" - speedometer gear - what ever it called or again the controller. Check cables to "pulse generator" on transmission. Be advised that if you change the the Trans Controller - the VIN is also stored in the controller and must be re-entered. For testing purposes you could borrow the controller from another (same year) Prowler. Just disconnect battery for 15 minutes before changing them.

I had the exact same problem after hitting a huge drop off in a constuction zone. Disconnecting the battery only makes it harder for the dealer to locate the problem. I tried that several times, first. They worked on it for a few hours, pronounced it cured and then immediately told me it wasn't fixed. They kept it overnight and I picked it up and the same thing happened again. When I pulled in the service bay the tech said, "I knew it wasn't fixed right". They ordered a new computer and gave me an appointment about 3 weeks later. It never did it again in the meantime. They replaced the computer and I haven't had another problem. I would turn off the engine and restart it and that would work some of the time. I could tell by the clunk when I put it in drive if it was stuck in second, before I ever put it auto stick mode. I don't think they ever figured out the cause but I will check the ground strap. Someone else told me there was a simple fix, that it was a sensor, similar to one on the Chrysler 300's and it should be in stock. Look at PPC on 6/13/00 under stuck in 2nd gear. Good luck.

First let me thank everyone who responded to this question through e-mail and this database. I have talked to the dealer service advisor, who I have delt with before, and he says it sounds like the Input/Output Speed sensor has gone out on it. Knowing that I have a Nitrous system will make no difference, he'll get it covered. Told him I own him and his wife a dinner on me. At least I'll not have to remove the system just to take it in...

Again thanks to the prowler owners who were very helpful.

Kitty has her claws back! as several of you indicated it was the "Speed Sensor" on the transmission and only took about 20 minutes to fix.

Here is a tip from the Prowler mechanic, he says they used to make that sensor in brass but not long back they started making it in plastic. He says they have been replacing a number of them lately due to the plastic can not take the heat like the brass one did.

Just in case I ordered another one for me to buy so if it gives out after warranty I'll have one already.

Here is the DC part number and description:
PT# = 4800879
Description = Sensor TR 8037155
Cost = $25.00 dealer price

Now we're back with the Fogger working too!!
