I drive my cat mostly using the autostick. I like the feel of smacking it into the next gear and the gurgle that it makes when downshifting. Is downshifting ok or will it hurt the car? Just wondering how many other people use autostick over auto? |

Auto-stick 80% of the time for me. I hate the way the trans, O.D. and lock-up in the converter always seem to searching for a gear. The only potential damage that I can think of would be to the shock absorbing parts of your drivetrain such as the motor mounts, transaxle mounts or the driveline bisquits that are used in place of the u-joints. These parts are built to take abuse but possibly the downshifting would add a little stress to them although I really don't feel that it would be significant. ------------------ |

Hi Larry, I agree with your comments about the OD aways hunting. I have noticed that if you have it in 3rd or 4th, in auto-stick, the OD hunts. I wish we could turn off and on, the OD in both drive and auto-stick. I will ask them on Thursday when we go to plant. Looking forward to meeting you and all the other real Prowler people at the Woodward Cruise. My wife and I are driving up to Detroit from south Florida in our yellow 99. Dave Ridge ex-PPC SC |

Dave, I think that what you're feeling while in 3rd and 4th gears is the torque converter lockup. I believe that 4th gear is an overdrive gear. It feels to me like driving in the "D" position, the transmission cannot decide if it wants to be in overdrive or in lockup. A little too much throttle pressure and the trans will downshift from 4th to 3rd gear. The other thing that happens is, if you lift your foot off the accelerator, the torque converter lockup dis-engages and when you again accelerate, the lockup will again take place as needed. This lockup feature is a definate advantage for gas mileage and low RPMs but it can sometimes be a little irritating. Maybe just too much traffic on the SoCal freeways to make it settle down. Once on an open stretch I will usually run in drive but around town or in traffic it Autostick for me. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Larry Lord (edited 08-05-2000).] |

I use my autostick most 90% of the time. I always wondered why in auto the transmission always seems to try to downshift at weird times. I also like to downshift and like the sound and feeling of downshifting. ------------------ |
