I posted this on the PPC but not sure if it might last since it advertises box building subwoofer software and magazines! http://www.employees.org/~propose/SUBS.TXT This is for those of you who are working on overhauling your audio system on your Prowlers! I used to design and install high end car audio! My appetite to do this again is beginning to wake up since I read some of you Prowler Enthusiasts are overhauling your sound stage! I have much more details on audio concepts but will post as I see needed! Later.... ------------------ |

Dan, Is your stereo stock in your car? What are your recommendations for the ultimate Prowler sound system?? ------------------ |

Mike, I'm just now looking over my Prowler and pondering that question? My Prowler sits stock but now I'm wondering if it should stay like that? One must decide up front whether your going for sound stage or SPL(Sound Pressure Level) before engineering an audio system! You can check out http://www.iasca.com/. IASCA also has a chat forum similar to this. The goal for me would be to build a solid sound stage up front. The wave lengths from the driver and passenger need to be almost equal. This would be accomplished by placing your door speakers down on your kick panels. The Prowler would present some interesting challenges but not impossible. Volume can be acheived with a few drivers but driver size would have to be maximized. Bass is somewhat of a challenge. There are some servo's that would tremoundously aid in the Prowler. These bass servo's react to frequencies below 50 or so hertz. These do not give out volume but aid in low frequency My ideal sound system is designed around sound clarity. There is a fine line between SPL's (Sound Pressure Levels) and sound quality. You cannot have both! It's kind of like if you want more horsepower, your gas mileage will suffer. If you want gas mileage, your horsepower will suffer. For the ultimate Prowler Sound System, I would choose Sound Clarity. The sound is loud but you would not be able to compete with the DB Drag guys who scream out 180db's plus. On these SPL installs, frequency clarity at around 10k hertz and above are very messy. The mids, bass, & subwoofers dominate in this arena. I think I'm taking on another project! Boy, it felt good doing a brain dump on my old hobby! Thanks Mike!! ------------------ |

Dan / Mike, I am somewhat familiar with sound systems, but it appears that Dan has a much better grasp of these things. I am right in the middle of my sound upgrade (see Technical discussion board). I am also after sound quality (SQ),rather than SPL or db's. I would be very interested in Dan critiquing my selection of equipment, and adding his comments. I really had an open ended budget for this project, so I tried to get the the best quality equipment / installation. I believe that a good installation can make good equipment sound great, and great equipment sound fantastic. I thought about Dan's kickpanel location, but it really isn't practical in the Prowler so I used the stock locations for the doors. I also did not want the the big subwoofer in the 'trunk', so for me a custom enclosure behind / between the seats. Trying to find the space for an optimum sub enclosure in the prowler is a great challenge. I decided to go for smaller subs with closer to the optimum size, rather than 10-12" subs in a less than ideal(small) enclosure. I will be updating my thread on Tech disc board with pics shortly. BTW, during the install I decided to add a nice EQ / Line pramp between the head unit and amp. |
